This style is a combination of the technique and terminology of Jazz, Ballet, Lyrical, and Modern and emphasizes freedom in movement and emotion. It has only recently emerged in the mid 20th century and has made an explosive entry into the dance industry! It’s popularity rose so quickly for how it connects the art of emotion in dance between the choreographer and the dancer, and likewise the dancer and the patron watching. The story telling with body language and artistry in expressive feelings make it easier for those watching to understand the message or story being told by the dancer.
Contemporary has a strong similarity to both Lyrical and Modern Dance. Most people have a difficult time understanding the differences. This is due in part to expression of the fundamentals of these two styles that when combined give the literal interpretation of a known story or the words of the song being danced to. We refer to this as storytelling. Students will learn to feel an emotional connection to the music and will in turn express the story of the music through their movement, lines and facial expressions.
Students are required to have a background in Ballet and/or Jazz in order to take Contemporary class, however they are not required to take these classes simultaneously though it is highly recommended.
